Where the Story Sleeps

From a historic Shanghai mansion to a family-run guesthouse in the Flores highlands, each stay has been chosen to suit the journey. The stays are organized along the route — Shanghai, Labuan Bajo, then the western or eastern Flores journey, and the optional nights that follow.

Shanghai

Days 04–06 · Three nights in the city.

Shanghai: Donghu Hotel

Shanghai Donghu Hotel

The Donghu MansionSupplied photograph · Shanghai Donghu Hotel

Some hotels you book. This one you step into. Shanghai Donghu Hotel is a genuine 1920s–30s mansion in the heart of the former French Concession — once the private residence of Du Yuesheng, one of old Shanghai’s most notorious figures — set back behind its own garden, a world away from the boulevard just beyond the wall.

Step off bustling Huaihai Middle Road and the city goes quiet — shaded garden paths, low heritage buildings, rooms that carry the era with them. Shaanxi South Road metro is about a minute on foot, and the whole French Concession neighborhood is at the door.

The essentials

  • Approximately $125–226 a night, depending on room and season — confirm current rates when booking.

  • Where: No. 70 Donghu Road, Xuhui — in the Huaihai Middle Road area of the former French Concession.

  • Getting there: Shaanxi South Road metro (Lines 1, 10 and 12), about a minute on foot.

History under your feet, the French Concession at the door — and after days of moving, a garden to come home to.

Shanghai: Fenyang Garden

Fenyang Garden Boutique Hotel

The Fenyang GardenSupplied photograph · Fenyang Garden Boutique Hotel

A few minutes’ walk from the Donghu, on quiet Fenyang Road, Fenyang Garden Boutique Hotel is the other way to spend these days: a Spanish-style historic building wrapped around a 2,000-square-metre garden lawn, carefully refreshed in 2019, with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music just down the street.

Same neighborhood, same easy reach of Huaihai Middle Road — a slightly different character. More garden estate than grand mansion, and a gentler rate; some travelers prefer the Donghu’s history, others Fenyang’s lawn.

The essentials

  • Approximately $103–169 a night, depending on room and season — confirm current rates when booking.

  • Where: No. 45 Fenyang Road, Xuhui — in the Huaihai Middle Road area of the former French Concession.

  • Getting there: Shaanxi South Road metro (Lines 1, 10 and 12) is a short walk away; Changshu Road station (Line 10) is also close.

A garden to wake up in, in the middle of the city.

Labuan Bajo

Days 07 & 10 · The gateway to the Komodo islands — and the base for the sailing.

A Note on Lodging

You mentioned liking a kitchen or kitchenette when you travel — a place where you can make breakfast, have a little more space, and occasionally feel like you’re living somewhere rather than simply staying there.

For Flores, we’ve made a slightly different trade-off.

Because you’ll be leaving Labuan Bajo for the Wae Rebo trek and the overnight boat, having a hotel that can store your luggage while you travel light becomes unusually useful. The stays are also short and the days are active, so there is less opportunity to make the most of a kitchen than there would be on a longer, more settled stay.

We’ve therefore prioritized a comfortable, clean hotel with reliable luggage storage here. If having a kitchen remains important to you, an apartment-style stay is absolutely worth exploring directly — particularly if you prefer that more residential feeling.

Flores: Labuan Bajo

Option A: Loccal Collection

Above Labuan BajoSupplied photograph · Loccal Collection

Your first night in Flores is intentionally easy.

After the flight from Shanghai, there’s no need to launch straight into an adventure. Settle in, sleep well, and let Flores begin tomorrow.

Why we like it: The hotel confirmed that a Suite is the best configuration for three, with an extra bed available for Mirabelle. They’ll also store your luggage securely while you’re away on the Wae Rebo trek and overnight boat — so you can travel light when the journey gets more adventurous.

The essentials

  • Approximately $218/night. Hotel details and room configuration to be confirmed at booking.

  • For the three of you: a Suite with an extra bed for Mirabelle.

  • Book directly: Loccal Collection ↗

The harbor at golden hour — Flores begins tomorrow.

Option B: Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo

A more conventional, full-service hotel in central Labuan Bajo, with convenient access to the harbor, restaurants, and airport. It has a substantial independent review history, with guests generally rating it highly.

I’d investigate this as the practical alternative, particularly if the family needs an overnight before an early departure.

Western Flores

If you choose the western journey · Days 11–15.

Flores: Dintor — Wae Rebo Trek

Option A: Parlezo Cottage Dintor

The Parlezo group’s Dintor property — its cottage stay in the highlands, rather than its Labuan Bajo hotel. Small cabins with a garden, a terrace and an on-site restaurant, positioned where the Wae Rebo trail begins.

The trade-off: the cabins are simple. What you’re buying here is position — waking up at the start of the trek rather than spending the day traveling to it.

The essentials

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed directly with the property.

  • Book: Parlezo ↗

Option B: Waerebo Lodge

A lodge stop before your journey — the property’s own phrase, and an accurate one. Waerebo Lodge sits among rice terraces above Dintor, with views across the valley, and is built for exactly this part of the trip: rest first, then the climb.

Why here: the rooms are grouped by what you need — Standard and Wooden rooms with fans, Deluxe rooms with air conditioning and hot water — so a good night before a hard trek is simply a matter of choosing the right room. Home-cooked meals are served daily, and the lodge arranges guides, transport and the village visit itself.

A detail worth knowing: ten percent of the room rate goes directly toward the social and cultural initiatives of the Wae Rebo community. The stay contributes to the village you’re going to see.

The essentials

  • Rooms sleep two — for three travelers, that’s a Deluxe Twin and a Deluxe Double, or two rooms.

  • Room configuration and current rates to be confirmed directly with the property.

  • Book: Waerebo Lodge ↗

Eastern Flores

If you choose the eastern journey · Days 11–15.

Flores: Ruteng

Option A: Casa Miya – Ruteng Guesthouse

A small guesthouse with strong guest feedback on cleanliness, comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, and helpful hosts. Reviews also mention reliable hot water, which is valuable in the cooler highlands.

The first night of the Eastern journey ends in Ruteng, and this is the sort of place that makes a long day of driving feel finished — a calm, well-kept house with a simple fresh breakfast, rather than a hotel corridor.

The essentials

  • Where: Jl. Gaspar Parang Ehok, Golo Dukal, on the eastern side of Ruteng.

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed directly with the guesthouse.

  • No published booking-page rates — reservations are taken through the guesthouse’s own channel.

  • Book: Casa Miya – Ruteng Guesthouse ↗

Option B: Ara Garden Inn

A quieter, garden-oriented property with comfortable rooms and a more secluded atmosphere. It’s outside central Ruteng, so we’d want to confirm the practicalities of dinner and transport.

The reason to choose it is the atmosphere rather than the address: a hillside garden property where guests describe spacious rooms, good hot water, and staff who will help arrange what you need locally.

The essentials

  • Where: Jalan Gewak 1, Nteer, Poco Mal — above and outside central Ruteng.

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed directly with the property.

  • Dinner and the next morning’s start need arranging in advance, given the distance from town.

  • Book: Ara Garden Inn ↗

Flores: Bajawa

Bajawa Roo Hotel

A small family-run hotel set on a little hill above Bajawa, with a panoramic view over the town that guests consistently single out. Rooms are described as clean, spacious and comfortable, with a terrace and restaurant on site.

After the long highland day from Ruteng, this is the kind of place that lets the evening slow down — quiet, away from the main streets, with staff known for helping arrange whatever comes next.

The essentials

  • Where: Jalan Rogangole, Ngali — on a rise above Bajawa town.

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed at booking.

  • Book: Bajawa Roo Hotel ↗

Flores: Moni

Option A: Villa Marcelinus

A small country house on the Moni–Kelimutu road, with a garden, mountain views and family rooms with private bathrooms and balconies. Guests rate it superb for its setting and its quiet.

The appeal here is position: you sleep close to Kelimutu, so the pre-dawn start for the three-colored lakes is as short as it can be.

The essentials

  • Where: Jalan Moni–Kelimutu, on the road up toward the national park.

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed at booking.

  • Book: Villa Marcelinus ↗

Option B: The Geckos Homestay

A family-run homestay in Woloara, just outside Moni — bungalows built by the owner Lopez himself, set in a garden on the family farm. Guests describe hot showers, comfortable beds, shared family dinners and a host with deep knowledge of the area.

The reason to choose it is the welcome: “arrive as a guest, leave as family” is how Lopez runs the place, and reviews say it’s true.

The essentials

  • Where: Woloara village, a short drive from Moni and the Kelimutu turn-off.

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed at booking.

  • Book: The Geckos Homestay ↗

Optional: Ende

The eastern journey's final night, if the route ends here.

Flores: Ende

Option A: LCR Hotel

A small, well-run hotel on a quiet lane in Ende, repeatedly described as the best stay in town — clean rooms, hot water, good English at the front desk, and a ground-floor restaurant serving breakfast and dinner.

For the last night before the onward flight, the practical details matter: a free airport shuttle, staff who go out of their way when flight schedules shift, and an early breakfast from 6 a.m.

The essentials

  • Where: Jalan Melati, East Ende — a quiet side street in town.

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed at booking.

  • Book: LCR Hotel ↗

Option B: Flores Passport House

A small, modern bed-and-breakfast with sea views, a swimming pool and a terrace — guests call out the architecture, the sunset views from the top deck and some of the best sleep they had on Flores.

The reason to choose it is the feeling of a final exhale: a beautiful, design-led house close to the airport, with staff who help arrange transport and breakfasts to take away.

The essentials

  • Where: Jalan Woloare, Ende — about 3 km from the airport, near Ria Cafe Beach.

  • Room configuration for three and current rates to be confirmed at booking.

  • Book: Flores Passport House ↗

Optional: Bali

If the flight home allows · Nights by the mountains and the sea.

These Bali nights are options depending on the Flores journey you choose — and the flight schedules.

Bali: Sidemen

Pandawa Villa Sidemen

Mount Agung from the VillaPhotograph · Pandawa Villa Sidemen

A small, quiet property surrounded by the Sidemen landscape, with mountain and garden views and a terrace/balcony looking toward the valley.

Why here: It’s comfortable, clean and beautifully placed without turning the final night into a luxury splurge. Sidemen gives you one last chance to encounter Bali through its working landscape rather than its resort infrastructure.

The trade-off: getting to the airport

Sidemen is approximately 1½–2 hours from Bali’s airport by car, depending on traffic and departure time. For a later flight, this is a beautiful way to end the journey. For an early flight, it means a very early departure.

If the timing works · Meet a Weaver

Sidemen is known for endek and songket, handwoven Balinese textiles still made in family compounds around the valley. If your arrival into Bali leaves enough time, we can arrange a visit with a local weaver — a chance to see the work up close and meet the person making it, rather than simply stopping at a shop.

The timing is the key: this is an opportunity, not a fixed appointment. If the flights make the Sidemen detour worthwhile, we’ll see whether a weaver can fit naturally into the afternoon. If not, the valley itself is the experience.

The essentials

  • For the three of you: the Deluxe Double Room accommodates 2 adults + 1 child, with a king bed, private bathroom, air conditioning and a terrace/balcony.

  • Breakfast is included.

  • The property also has a restaurant, so there is no need to make dinner another logistical project.

One last evening in the working landscape — rice fields, village roads, Mount Agung on the horizon.

Bali: Sanur

Segara Village Hotel

The Lagoon, SanurSupplied photograph · Segara Village Hotel

One more possibility for the way home. Segara Village sits on the beachfront at Sanur, roughly half an hour from Bali's airport — traditional Balinese bungalows set in gardens and palms, rather than an airport-chain hotel.

The pools are made for one last swim, the hotel's Italian-Mediterranean restaurant, Byrd House, is on the property, and the whole place carries the unhurried feel of older Sanur. If the flight home leaves early, this is the easier final night; otherwise, keep the rice fields of Sidemen.

The essentials

  • For the three of you: Bungalow rooms and the two-storey Family Bungalow (two separate bedrooms, two bathrooms) — confirm the best fit when booking.

  • Where: Segara Beach, Sanur — on the coast, about 30 minutes from Bali's international airport.

  • Rates: to confirm when booking.

An optional final night — one last swim before the flight home.
